Biological Significance: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, causing a hyperpolarization of the membrane through the opening of a Cl? channel associated with the GABAA receptor (GABAA-R) subtype. GABAA-Rs are important therapeutic targets for a range of sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic agents and are implicated in several diseases including epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The GABAA-R is a multimeric subunit complex. To date six ?s, four ?s and four ?s, plus alternative splicing variants of some of these subunits, have been identified (Olsen and Tobin, 1990; Whiting et al., 1999; Ogris et al., 2004). Injection in oocytes or mammalian cell lines of cRNA coding for ?- and ?-subunits results in the expression of functional GABAA-Rs sensitive to GABA. However, coexpression of a ?-subunit is required for benzodiazepine modulation. The various effects of the benzodiazepines in brain may also be mediated via different ?-subunits of the receptor (McKernan et al., 2000; Mehta and Ticku, 1998; Ogris et al., 2004; Pöltl et al., 2003).

subunit of the GABAA receptor; may be part of distinct GABAA receptors within the olfactory bulb [RGD, Feb 2006]

Uniprot Description

Function: GABA, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain, mediates neuronal inhibition by binding to the GABA/benzodiazepine receptor and opening an integral chloride channel.

Subunit structure: Generally pentameric. There are five types of GABA(A) receptor chains: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and rho.

Subcellular location: Cell junction › synapse › postsynaptic cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the ligand-gated ion channel (TC 1.A.9) family. Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor (TC 1.A.9.5) subfamily. GABRA5 sub-subfamily. [View classification]

Product Notes

The GABRA5 gabra5 (Catalog #AAA502047) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Anti-GABAA Receptor, alpha5-Subunit reacts with Tested: Mouse, rat. Predicted: Bovine, Canine, Chicken, Human, Non-human Primate, Zebrafish and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's GABAA Receptor a 5 can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB); Dot Blots (DB). Suitability for Immunohistochemistry (IHC) not yet determined. Quality Control: Dot Blots & Western blots performed on each lot. Working Dilutions: WB 1:500. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the GABRA5 gabra5 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "GABAA Receptor a 5, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
