Ribosomal proteins (RPs) have been shown to be able to impart selectivity on the translating ribosome implicating them in gene expression control. Rpl39l and Rpl10l are expressed at very high levels in the testis and Rpl39l is upregulated in many cancer cell lines. Rpl39l and its paralog Rpl39 encode proteins that share 92% amino acid sequence similarity. In mammals, RPL39L has a highly conserved Arginine (R) to Glutamine (Q) amino acid change resulting in the loss of a positive charge when compared with RPL39. This conserved change suggests functional significance.
