SMG8 (SMG8 Nonsense Mediated mRNA Decay Factor) is a Protein Coding gene. The SMG8 gene, located on 17q23.2, is conserved in chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, zebrafish, fruit fly, mosquito, and frog. Phosphorylation of the core Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) component UPF1 is critical for NMD and is regulated in mammals by the SURF complex (UPF1, SMG1 kinase, SMG8, SMG9, and eukaryotic release factors). SMG8 is widely expressed in the ovary, testis, and other tissues. Diseases associated with SMG8 include Metaphyseal Chondrodysplasia, Schmid Type, and Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy 1.
