Background: Gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), also known as the glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide, is an inhibiting hormone of the secretin family of hormones. GIP is thought to have significant effects on fatty acid metabolism through stimulation of lipoprotein lipase activity in adipocytes. Additionally, GIP release has been demonstrated in the ruminant animal and may play a role in nutrient partitioning in milk production (lipid metabolism). Recently, GIP appeared as a major player in bone remodelling. It was evidenced that genetic ablation of the GIP receptor in mice resulted in profound alterations of bone microarchitecture through modification of the adipokine network. Furthermore, the deficiency in GIP receptors has also been associated in mice with a dramatic decrease in bone quality and a subsequent increase in fracture risk.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes an incretin hormone that belongs to the glucagon superfamily. The encoded preproprotein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate mature peptides that function as potent stimulators of insulin secretion and inhibit gastric acid secretion. Transgenic mice overexpressing the encoded protein exhibit a significant increase in the expression of markers of bone formation, a decrease in the expression of markers of bone resorption and, an increase in the bone mass. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2015]

Uniprot Description

GIP: Potent stimulator of insulin secretion and relatively poor inhibitor of gastric acid secretion. Belongs to the glucagon family.

Product Notes

The GIP gip (Catalog #AAA178447) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Anti-GIP Antibody reacts with Mouse No cross reactivity with other proteins. and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's GIP can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB). Western Blot: 0.1-0.5mug/ml; Tested Species: Mouse Tested Species:In-house tested species with positive results. Other applications have not been tested. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the GIP gip for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "GIP, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
