SLC39A8 (also known as Zn transporter ZIP8) is an evolutionarily highly conserved gene that encodes the ZIP8 metal cation transporter in all vertebrates. SLC39A8 is ubiquitously expressed, including pluripotent embryonic stem cells. ZIP8 also mediates the cellular uptake of divalent metal ions including iron, manganese, and the toxic heavy metal cadmium. SLC39A8 deficiency is a severe inborn error of metabolism that is caused by impaired function of manganese metabolism in humans. Mutations in SLC39A8 lead to impaired function of the manganese transporter ZIP8 and thus manganese deficiency.
