NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
This gene encodes a type I membrane protein and member of the immunoglobulin-like superfamily. It is expressed in myelinating glial cells, including oligodendrocytes of the central nervous system and Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. Mice lacking the encoded protein express abundant myelin, but suffer long-term axon degeneration, altered distribution of channels and adhesion molecules at nodes of Ranvier, and altered axon cytoskeletal structure. While not required for myelination, the encoded protein enhances axon-myelin stability, helps to structure nodes of Ranvier, and regulates the axon cytoskeleton. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2016]
Uniprot Description
MAG: Adhesion molecule in postnatal neural development that mediates sialic-acid dependent cell-cell interactions between neuronal and myelinating cells. Preferentially binds to alpha-2,3- linked sialic acid. Binds to RTN4R. Belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily. SIGLEC (sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin) family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
Protein type: Cell adhesion; Membrane protein, integral
Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 7 B1|7 19.26 cM
Cellular Component: cytoplasm; myelin sheath; paranode region of axon; plasma membrane
Molecular Function: protein binding; protein kinase binding; receptor binding

Product Notes
The MAG / GMA mag (Catalog #AAA2546617) is a Recombinant Protein produced from Human Cells and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The recombinant mouse Mag consists of 508 amino acids and predicts a molecular mass of 56.3 kDa. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the MAG / GMA mag for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "MAG / GMA / Siglec-4, Recombinant Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
