This gene encodes a metal-binding membrane glycoprotein that oxidatively deaminates putrescine, histamine, and related compounds. The encoded protein is inhibited by amiloride, a diuretic that acts by closing epithelial sodium ion channels. Placental DAO is thought to play a role in the regulation of the female reproductive function. Belongs to the copper/topaquinone oxidase family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
