Zinc finger and BTB domain-containing 20 (ZBTB20) is a member of the POK family of proteins, which function primarily as transcriptional repressors via interactions mediated by their conserved C(2)H(2) Kruppel type zinc finger and BTB/POZ domains. The transcriptional factor ZBTB20 is widely expressed in brain tissues and participates in hippocampal development. ZBTB20, an important transcriptional factor in pituitary development, is mainly responsible for the terminal differentiation of prolactin-secreting cells, thereby regulating the secretion of the pituitary hormones. ZBTB20 functions as a molecular switch for a pathway that induces invariant pyramidal neuron morphogenesis and suppression of cell fate transitions in newborn neurons. ZBTB20 plays a crucial role in the regulation of heart development, energy metabolism, and contractility. ZBTB20 has been found to be involved in tumorigenesis.
