The protein encoded by this gene is a transmembrane protein and sodium-dependent lysophosphatidylcholine transporter. The encoded protein is involved in the establishment of the blood-brain barrier and is required for brain growth and function. Defects in this gene are a cause of a progressive microcephaly syndrome. Defects in TBX5 are the cause of Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS). HOS is a developmental disorder affecting the heart and upper limbs. It is characterized by thumb anomaly and atrial septal defects. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
