StarD7 is a phosphatidylcholine (PC)-specific lipid transfer protein essential for the maintenance of mitochondrial PC composition, morphogenesis, and respiration. StarD7 is a surface active protein, structurally related to the START lipid transport family. StarD7 is involved in the delivery of phosphatidylcholine to the mitochondria whose promoter is activated by Wnt/beta-catenin signaling. StarD7 facilitates the delivery of phosphatidylcholine (PC) to the mitochondria, and StarD7 knockdown causes a reduction in phospholipid synthesis. StarD7 plays important roles in maintaining the proper composition of mitochondrial phospholipids as well as mitochondrial function and morphogenesis.
