ALDH1A2 is a rate-limiting enzyme involved in cellular retinoic acid synthesis. ALDH1 has three main isotypes, ALDH1A1, ALDH1A2, and ALDH1A3, and is a marker of normal tissue stem cells (SC) and cancer stem cells (CSC), where it is involved in self-renewal, differentiation and self-protection. ALDH1A2 is a candidate tumor suppressor in epithelial ovarian cancer. ALDH1A2 suppresses epithelial ovarian cancer cell proliferation and migration by downregulating STAT3. Enzymes of the ALDH1A subfamily of aldehyde dehydrogenases are crucial in regulating retinoic acid (RA) signaling and have received attention as potential drug targets.
