The protein encoded by this gene may play a role in the attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or to stromal cells. This single-pass membrane protein is highly glycosylated and phosphorylated by protein kinase C. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Could act as a scaffold for the attachment of lineage specific glycans, allowing stem cells to bind to lectins expressed by stromal cells or other marrow components. Presents carbohydrate ligands to selectins. Selectively expressed on hematopoietic progenitor cells and the small vessel endothelium of a variety of tissues. Belongs to the CD34 family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

The secreted recombinant human CD34 consists of 270 amino acids after removal of the signal peptide and has a predicted molecular mass of 29 kDa. In SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions, rh CD34 migrates with the apparent molecular mass betwwen 40 and 50 kDa due to different glycosylation. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the CD34 cd34 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process.
