• Specificity: This affinity purified antibody recognizes an epitope in the C-terminus of mouse TCP-1a (465-AKLRA) and will detect an ~60kD protein, corresponding to the apparent molecular mass of TCP-1alpha on SDS-PAGE immunoblots, in samples from human, mouse, rat, bovine, canine, guinea pig, hamster, monkey, porcine and rabbit origins, as well as Saccharomyces cerevisiae (weakly, consistent with the epitope sequence being AKLRS), Drosophila, Schizosaccharomyces pombe and C. elegans. TCP-1alpha is a 60kD subunit of a cytosolic hetero-oligomer chaperone (1,4) that is known to be involved in the folding of actin and tubulin. This protein is a member of the chaperonin family, which includes Escherichia coli GroEL, the mitochondrial heat-shock protein Hsp60, the plastid Rubisco-subunit-binding protein and the archaebacterial protein TF55. These chaperonins assist the folding of proteins upon ATP hydrolysis. Nine different subunits of TCP-1 containing chaperonin complexes from mammalian testis and seven different subunits of mouse F9 cells have been identified. TCP-1 has also been referred to as ëTRicí, TCP-1 ring complex or the chaperonin containing complex, CCT.

The protein encoded by this gene is a molecular chaperone that is a member of the chaperonin containing TCP1 complex (CCT), also known as the TCP1 ring complex (TRiC). This complex consists of two identical stacked rings, each containing eight different proteins. Unfolded polypeptides enter the central cavity of the complex and are folded in an ATP-dependent manner. The complex folds various proteins, including actin and tubulin. Alternate transcriptional splice variants of this gene, encoding different isoforms, have been characterized. In addition, three pseudogenes that appear to be derived from this gene have been found.
