Placental Alkaline Phosphatase (PLAP) is an enzyme produced by primordial germ cells and syncytiotrophoblasts found in normal mature human placenta. PLAP is useful for identifying seminomas of testis, gestational trophoblastic disease, and ovarian carcinomas. Anti-PLAP is also useful in differentiating germ cell tumors from other neoplasms, and may react with somatic neoplasms such as breast, gastrointestinal, prostatic, and urinary cancers. PLAP has also been indicated as a potential myogenic marker for identifying soft tissue tumors.
