The protein encoded by this gene localizes to centrosomes, strengthening and stabilizing the pericentriolar region prior to spindle formation. The encoded protein usually remains with the mother centrosome after centrosomal duplication. Sevral transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Kizuna: a novel centrosomal protein that, along with the protein kinase Plk1, plays an important role in establishing the mitotic centrosomal architecture during spindle formation and maintaining spindle bipolarity. Its depletion causes centriolar instability during prometaphase which results in multipolar spindles. Four alternatively spliced human isoforms have been reported.
