Principle of the Assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for melanotransferrin has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any melanotransferrin present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for melanotransferrin is added to the wells. After washing, avidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of melanotransferrin bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene is a cell-surface glycoprotein found on melanoma cells. The protein shares sequence similarity and iron-binding properties with members of the transferrin superfamily. The importance of the iron binding function has not yet been identified. This gene resides in the same region of chromosome 3 as members of the transferrin superfamily. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

MFI2: Involved in iron cellular uptake. Seems to be internalized and then recycled back to the cell membrane. Binds a single atom of iron per subunit. Could also bind zinc. Belongs to the transferrin family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Membrane protein, GPI anchor

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 3q28-q29

Cellular Component: anchored to plasma membrane; cell surface; integral to plasma membrane

Molecular Function: protein binding; ferric iron binding; iron ion binding

Biological Process: cellular iron ion homeostasis; regulation of cell growth; regulation of cell proliferation

Product Notes

The Human MFI2 mfi2 (Catalog #AAA946083) is an ELISA Kit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The AAA946083 ELISA Kit recognizes Human MFI2. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "antigen p97 (melanoma associated) identified by monoclonal antibodies 133.2 and 96.5, ELISA Kit" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
