Mrp genes are not a gene family descended from a single ancestral gene, and that each MRP has unique and essential role in the mitoribosome complex. Mutations in genes encoding ribosomal proteins (RPs) have been shown to cause an array of cellular and developmental defects in a variety of organisms.
