Principle of the Assay: This assay employs the competitive inhibition enzyme immunoassay technique. The microtiter plate provided in this kit has been pre-coated with citrulline antibody. Standards or samples are added to the appropriate microtiter plate wells with Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) conjugated citrulline. The competitive inhibition reaction is launched between with HRP labeled citrulline and unlabeled citrulline with the antibody. A substrate solution is added to the wells and the color develops in opposite to the amount of citrulline in the sample. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene is a copper-containing glycoprotein found soluble in the serum and GPI-anchored in other tissues. It oxidizes Fe(II) to Fe(III) and is proposed to play an important role in iron homeostasis. In humans mutations of this gene cause aceruloplasminemia, which is characterized by retinal degeneration, diabetes, anemia and neurological symptoms. In mouse deficiency of this gene in combination with a deficiency of its homolog hephaestin causes retinal degeneration and serves as a pathophysiological model for aceruloplasminemia and age-related macular degeneration. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants that encode different protein isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2013]

Function: Ceruloplasmin is a blue, copper-binding (6-7 atoms per molecule) glycoprotein. It has ferroxidase activity oxidizing Fe2+ to Fe3+ without releasing radical oxygen species. It is involved in iron transport across the cell membrane. Provides Cu2+ ions for the ascorbate-mediated deaminase degradation of the heparan sulfate chains of GPC1. May also play a role in fetal lung development or pulmonary antioxidant defense

Catalytic activity: 4 Fe2+ + 4 H+ + O2 = 4 Fe3+ + 2 H2O.

Cofactor: Binds 6 copper ions per monomer
