BPIFA1 may also serve as a potential molecular marker for detection of micrometastasis in non-small-cell lung cancer. Decreased levels of BPIFA1 are observed in the NLF of smokers and people who have been exposed to reactive epoxy chemicals, which indicats that long-term exposure to airway irritants damages the production of BPIFA1 in the upper respiratory tract.
