Ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase hinge protein (UQCRH), as a connecter between cytochrome c1 with cytochrome c in complex III of the respiratory chain, is the top-ranked hypermethylated gene in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). UQCRH is a novel protein that localizes in the mitochondrial membrane and induces mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and consists of the cytochrome bc1 complex serving respiration in mitochondria. Alterations in mitochondrial respiration contribute to the development and progression of cancer via abnormal biogenesis, including the generation of reactive oxygen species. Serum UQCRH could be a potential biomarker for lung adenocarcinoma. UQCRH is a potential independent favorable prognostic factor for recurrence and survival of patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) after nephrectomy.
