Scientific Background: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an endogenously produced intracellular enzyme present in almost every cell in the body (3). It works by catalyzing the dismutation of the superoxide radical O2" to O2 and H2O2, which are then metabolized to H2O and O2 by catalase and glutathione peroxidase (2,5). In general, SODs play a major role in antioxidant defense mechanisms (4). There are two main types of SOD in mammalian cells. One form (SOD1) contains Cu and Zn ions as a homodimer and exists in the cytoplasm. The two subunits of 16 kDa each are linked by two cysteines forming an intra-subunit disulphide bridge (3). The second form (SOD2) is a manganese containing enzyme and resides in the mitochondrial matrix. It is a homotetramer of 80 kDa. The third form (SOD3 or EC-SOD) is like SOD1 in that it contains Cu and Zn ions, however it is distinct in that it is a homotetramer, with a mass of 30 kDA and it exists only in the extra-cellular space (7). SOD3 can also be distinguished by its heparin-binding capacity (1).

Uniprot Description
SOD2: Destroys superoxide anion radicals which are normally produced within the cells and which are toxic to biological systems. Genetic variation in SOD2 is associated with susceptibility to microvascular complications of diabetes type 6 (MVCD6). These are pathological conditions that develop in numerous tissues and organs as a consequence of diabetes mellitus. They include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy leading to end-stage renal disease, and diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic retinopathy remains the major cause of new- onset blindness among diabetic adults. It is characterized by vascular permeability and increased tissue ischemia and angiogenesis. Belongs to the iron/manganese superoxide dismutase family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Product Notes
The Sod2 sod2 (Catalog #AAA806474) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The SOD (Mn) Antibody: RPE reacts with Human, Rat, Mouse, Bovine, Canine, Chicken, Dosophila, Guinea pig, Pig, Hamster, Monkey, Rabbit, Sheep, Xenopus and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's SOD (Mn) can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB), Immunoprecipitation (IP), ELISA (EIA), Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Immunofluorescence (IF). 0.5ug/ml was sufficient for detection of Mn SOD in 20ug of rat brain tissue extract. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the Sod2 sod2 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "SOD (Mn), Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
