The protein encoded by this gene is a myosin light chain that may regulate muscle contraction by modulating the ATPase activity of myosin heads. Implicated in cytokinesis, receptor capping, and cell locomotion. Myosin is an hexamer of 2 heavy chains and 4 light chains. Smooth muscle tissues and in some, but not all, nonmuscle cells. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
