This gene product is a transcription factor that is important in the regulation of B lymphocyte proliferation and differentiation. Both Ikaros and Aiolos can participate in chromatin remodeling. Regulation of gene expression in B lymphocytes by Aiolos is complex as it appears to require the sequential formation of Ikaros homodimers, Ikaros/Aiolos heterodimers, and Aiolos homodimers. Aiolos: a transcription factor of the ikaros C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family. Plays an important role in the regulation of lymphocyte differentiation. Deletions in Aiolos have been observed in a subset of pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) cases. 6 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
