Scientific Background: Heme-oxygenase is a ubiquitous enzyme that catalyzes the initial and rate-limiting steps in heme catabolism yielding equimolar amounts of biliverdin, iron and carbon monoxide. Biliverdin is subsequently converted to bilirubin and the free iron is sequestered to ferritin (1). These products have important physiological effects as carbon monoxide is a potent vasodilator; biliverdin and bilirubin are potent antioxidants; and the free iron increases oxidative stress and regulates the expression of many mRNAs (2). There are three isoforms of heme-oxygenase, HO-1, HO-2 and HO-3; however HO-1 and HO-2 are the major isoforms as they both have been identified in mammals (3). HO-1, also known as heat shock protein 32, is an inducible isoform activated by most oxidative stress inducers, cytokines, inflammatory agents and heat shock. HO-2 is a constitutive isoform which is expressed under homeostatic conditions.
NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
catalyzes the conversion of heme to biliverdin; involved in cellular response to oxidative stress [RGD, Feb 2006]
Uniprot Description
HMOX2: Heme oxygenase cleaves the heme ring at the alpha methene bridge to form biliverdin. Biliverdin is subsequently converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase. Under physiological conditions, the activity of heme oxygenase is highest in the spleen, where senescent erythrocytes are sequestrated and destroyed. Heme oxygenase 2 could be implicated in the production of carbon monoxide in brain where it could act as a neurotransmitter. Belongs to the heme oxygenase family.
Protein type: Endoplasmic reticulum; Oxidoreductase; EC 1.14.99.3; Cofactor and Vitamin Metabolism - porphyrin and chlorophyll
Cellular Component: membrane; endoplasmic reticulum; plasma membrane
Molecular Function: protein binding; metal ion binding; heme oxygenase (decyclizing) activity
Biological Process: response to hypoxia; heme oxidation; response to oxidative stress

Product Notes
The Hmox2 hmox2 (Catalog #AAA806187) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The HO-2 Antibody: ATTO 488 reacts with Rat, Mouse, Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's HO-2 can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western (WB), Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Immunoprecipitation (IP). 1:1000 (IHC), 1:500 (WB), 1:100 (IP). Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the Hmox2 hmox2 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "HO-2, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
