BCAN: a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan expressed in the developing and adult brain, and increases as the brain develops. One of the most abundant chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans in the adult brain. Contains a hyaluronic acid-binding domain in its N-terminus and a lectin-like domain in its C-terminus. A member of the aggrecan/versican family of proteoglycans. Two isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. Isoform 1 is secreted into extracellular space and associates with the extracellular matrix. Isoform 2 is a GPI-anchored membrane protein.
