Background: Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), also known as NPPA or PND, is a powerful vasodilator, and a protein (polypeptide) hormone secreted by heart muscle cells. This gene is mapped to 1p36.22. It is involved in the homeostatic control of body water, sodium, potassium and fat (adipose tissue). ANP is released by muscle cells in the upper chambers (atria) of the heart (atrial myocytes) in response to high blood volume. It acts to reduce the water, sodium and adipose loads on the circulatory system, thereby reducing blood pressure. ANP has exactly the opposite function of the aldosterone secreted by the zona glomerulosa in regard to its effect on sodium in the kidney that is, aldosterone stimulates sodium retention and it generates sodium loss.
NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the natriuretic peptide family. Natriuretic peptides are implicated in the control of extracellular fluid volume and electrolyte homeostasis. This protein is synthesized as a large precursor (containing a signal peptide), which is processed to release a peptide from the N-terminus with similarity to vasoactive peptide, cardiodilatin, and another peptide from the C-terminus with natriuretic-diuretic activity. Mutations in this gene have been associated with atrial fibrillation familial type 6. This gene is located adjacent to another member of the natriuretic family of peptides on chromosome 1. Uniprot Description
NPPA: Hormone playing a key role in cardiovascular homeostasis through regulation of natriuresis, diuresis, and vasodilation. Also plays a role in female pregnancy by promoting trophoblast invasion and spiral artery remodeling in uterus. Specifically binds and stimulates the cGMP production of the NPR1 receptor. Binds the clearance receptor NPR3. Defects in NPPA are the cause of familial atrial fibrillation type 6 (ATFB6). Atrial fibrillation is a common disorder of cardiac rhythm that is hereditary in a small subgroup of patients. It is characterized by disorganized atrial electrical activity, progressive deterioration of atrial electromechanical function and ineffective pumping of blood into the ventricles. It can be associated with palpitations, syncope, thromboembolic stroke, and congestive heart failure. Belongs to the natriuretic peptide family.

The ANP nppa (Catalog #AAA177925) is an Antibody and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Anti-ANP Antibody reacts with Mouse, Rat; Predicted to work with: Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's ANP can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB). Western Blot -- Concentration: 0.1-0.5ug/ml Tested Species: Mouse, Rat Predicted Species: Human Antigen Retrieval: N/A WB: The detection limit for ANP is approximately 0.25 ng/lane under reducing conditions. Tested Species: In-house tested species with positive results. Predicted Species: Species predicted to be fit for the product based on sequence similarities. Other applications have not been tested. Optimal dilutions to be determined by end users. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the ANP nppa for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "ANP, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
