Background: IkBa phospho Ser32,36-NFkB (NFkB p50 & NFkB p65) signaling is controlled to a large extent by the sequestration of the NFkB complex in the cytoplasm by its association with one of the IkB family of proteins. IkBa is phosphorylated at Ser32 and Ser36 by the IkB Kinase (IKK) complex, resulting in the degradation of IkB and the nuclear translocation of NFkB.

This gene encodes a member of the NF-kappa-B inhibitor family, which contain multiple ankrin repeat domains. The encoded protein interacts with REL dimers to inhibit NF-kappa-B/REL complexes which are involved in inflammatory responses. The encoded protein moves between the cytoplasm and the nucleus via a nuclear localization signal and CRM1-mediated nuclear export.
