Related Product Information for SORD assay kit
Background/Introduction: Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), found in organisms from bacteria to humans, converts sorbitol, the sugar alcohol form of glucose, to fructose, and the zinc-dependent reaction uses NAD+ as a cofactor. Organs abundant in SDH activity include the liver, kidney, lens and seminal vesicle. SDH and aldose reductase (AR) form the polyol pathway that interconverts glucose and fructose. Since SDH activity promotes the formation of NADH, the redox change induced by elevated SDH may have a pathogenic role in certain disease state, making SDH a potential therapeutic target. In addition, SDH has a close evolutionary relationship with alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). The assay is initiated with the enzymatic hydrolysis of the sorbitol by sorbitol dehydrogenase. The enzyme catalysed reaction products NADH, can be measured at a colorimetric readout at 340 nm.

NCBI Description

Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORD; EC 1.1.1.14) catalyzes the interconversion of polyols and their corresponding ketoses, and together with aldose reductase (ALDR1; MIM 103880), makes up the sorbitol pathway that is believed to play an important role in the development of diabetic complications (summarized by Carr and Markham, 1995 [PubMed 8535074]). The first reaction of the pathway (also called the polyol pathway) is the reduction of glucose to sorbitol by ALDR1 with NADPH as the cofactor. SORD then oxidizes the sorbitol to fructose using NAD(+) cofactor.[supplied by OMIM, Jul 2010]

Uniprot Description

SORD: Converts sorbitol to fructose. Part of the polyol pathway that plays an important role in sperm physiology. May play a role in the sperm motility by providing an energetic source for sperm. Belongs to the zinc-containing alcohol dehydrogenase family.

Product Notes

The General SORD sord (Catalog #AAA8243258) is an Assay Kit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The AAA8243258 Assay Kit recognizes General SORD. AAA Biotech's Sorbitol Dehydrogenase can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Functional Assay. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the SORD sord for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Sorbitol Dehydrogenase, Assay Kit" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
