Uniprot Description

Function: Metalloreductase responsible for reducing extracellular iron and copper prior to import. Catalyzes the reductive uptake of Fe3+-salts and Fe3+ bound to catecholate or hydroxamate siderophores. Fe3+ is reduced to Fe2+, which then dissociates from the siderophore and can be imported by the high-affinity Fe2+ transport complex in the plasma membrane. Also participates in Cu2+ reduction and Cu+ uptake. Ref.1 Ref.6 Ref.7 Ref.8 Ref.10 Ref.15 Ref.16

Catalytic activity: 2 Fe2+ + NADP+ = 2 Fe3+ + NADPH.

Cofactor: FAD

Probable.Heme.

Enzyme regulation: Inhibited by nitric oxide (NO). Ref.18

Subcellular location: Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein Ref.7 Ref.21.

Induction: By transription factor MAC1 upon copper deprivation and by transcription factor AFT1 upon iron deprivation. Ref.1 Ref.5 Ref.6 Ref.10 Ref.11 Ref.12 Ref.14 Ref.18 Ref.20

Biotechnological use: Responsible for the reduction of the azo bond of azo dyes, making yeasts efficient azo dye decolorizers. Ref.19

Miscellaneous: Present with 892 molecules/cell in log phase SD medium.

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the ferric reductase (FRE) family.Contains 1 FAD-binding FR-type domain.Contains 1 ferric oxidoreductase domain.

It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Ferric/cupric reductase transmembrane component 1 (FRE1), Recombinant Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
