Purity/Purification
Highly Purified
95% by RP-HPLC, FPLC, or reducing/non-reducing SDS-PAGE Silver Stain. Chromatographically purified.
Form/Format
Supplied as a lyophilized powder in 10mM sodium phosphate, pH 8.0, 50mM sodium chloride.
Sequence
The sequence of the first five N-terminal amino acids was determined and was found to be Met-Leu-Pro-Ile-Cys.
Biological Activity
Prolactin is fully biologically active when compared to standard. The ED50 as determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of the proliferation of rat lymphoma, Nb2-11 was found to be < 0.065ng/ml.
Preparation and Storage
Lyophilized powder may be stored at -20 degree C. Stable for 12 months at -20 degree C. Reconstitute with sterile ddH2O, 0.1% BSA or HSA. Aliquot and store at -20 degree C. Reconstituted product is stable for 6 months at -20 degree C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
Related Product Information for PRL active protein
Prolactin is a lactogenic hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis. Besides its major action on lactation, in some species prolactin exerts effects on reproduction, maternal behavior, fat metabolism, immunomodulation and osmoregulation. Prolactin has been shown also to have cytokine-like activities and to have important immunoregulatory activities. It contributes to the development of lymphoid tissues and the maintenance of physiological immune function and also modulates a variety of T-cell immune responses. Prolactin has been reported to activate cellular proliferation in nonreproductive tissue, such as liver, spleen, and thymus. It induces significant proliferation in aortic smooth muscle cells and also enhances proliferation of these cells induced by PDGF. Prolactin also appears to be directly mitogenic for pancreatic beta cells. Prolactin is also mitogenic for cultured astrocytes.

Recombinant Human Prolactin is a single, non-glycosylated polypeptide chain containing 200 amino acids and having a molecular mass of ~23kD.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes the anterior pituitary hormone prolactin. This secreted hormone is a growth regulator for many tissues, including cells of the immune system. It may also play a role in cell survival by suppressing apoptosis, and it is essential for lactation. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants that encode the same protein. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2011]

Uniprot Description

prolactin: Prolactin acts primarily on the mammary gland by promoting lactation. Belongs to the somatotropin/prolactin family.

Protein type: Motility/polarity/chemotaxis; Cytokine; Secreted; Secreted, signal peptide

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 6p22.3

Cellular Component: extracellular region

Molecular Function: protein binding; prolactin receptor binding; hormone activity

Biological Process: lactation; cell proliferation; cell surface receptor linked signal transduction; positive regulation of JAK-STAT cascade; regulation of multicellular organism growth; female pregnancy

Product Notes

The PRL prl (Catalog #AAA635539) is an Active Protein produced from E Coli and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The amino acid sequence is listed below: The sequence of the first five N-terminal amino acids was determined and was found to be Met-Leu-Pr o-Ile-Cys. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Prolactin, Active Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
