NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene is specifically expressed in the inner ear, and is located at the interface between the apical surface of the inner ear sensory epithelia and their overlying acellular gels. It is prposed that this protein is involved in the attachment of the inner ear acellular gels to the apical surface of the underlying nonsensory cells. Mutations in this gene are associated with autosomal recessive deafness type 22 (DFNB22). Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

Uniprot Description

OTOA: May act as an adhesion molecule. Defects in OTOA are the cause of deafness autosomal recessive type 22 (DFNB22). DFNB22 is a form of sensorineural hearing loss. Sensorineural deafness results from damage to the neural receptors of the inner ear, the nerve pathways to the brain, or the area of the brain that receives sound information. Belongs to the stereocilin family. 4 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Membrane protein, GPI anchor; Cancer Testis Antigen (CTA); Extracellular matrix

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 16p12.2|16p12.2

Cellular Component: cell surface

Biological Process: cell-matrix adhesion; sensory perception of sound

Disease: Deafness, Autosomal Recessive 22

Product Notes

The OTOA otoa (Catalog #AAA9218181) is a Blocking Peptide and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "OTOA, Blocking Peptide" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
