NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
This gene encodes a kinase that phosphorylates sphingosine into sphingosine-1-phosphate, which is involved in cell differentiation, motility, and apoptosis. The encoded protein plays a role in maintaining cellular levels of sphingosine-1-phosphate. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2010]
Uniprot Description
SPHK1: Catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to form sphingosine 1-phosphate (SPP), a lipid mediator with both intra- and extracellular functions. Also acts on D-erythro-sphingosine and to a lesser extent sphinganine, but not other lipids, such as D,L-threo-dihydrosphingosine, N,N-dimethylsphingosine, diacylglycerol, ceramide, or phosphatidylinositol. Interacts with ACY1. Binds to calmodulin. Interacts with SPHKAP. Widely expressed with highest levels in adult liver, kidney, heart and skeletal muscle. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Product Notes
The Sphk1 sphk1 (Catalog #AAA635669) is an Active Protein produced from Baculovirus infected Sf9 cells and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. Useful for the study of enzyme kinetics, screening inhibitors, and selectivity profiling. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the Sphk1 sphk1 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "SPHK1a, Active Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
