Intended Uses: This immunoassay kit allows for the in vitro quantitative determination ofmouseApelinconcentrations in serum, plasma,tissue homogenates and cell culture supernates and other biological fluids.

Principle of the Assay: The microtiter plate provided in this kit has been pre-coated with an antibody specific to Apelin. Standards or samples are then added to the appropriate microtiter plate wells with a biotinconjugated polyclonal antibody preparation specific forApelin and Avidin conjugated to Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to each microplate well and incubated. Then a TMB substrate solution is added to each well. Only those wells that contain Apelin, biotin- conjugated antibody and enzyme-conjugated Avidin will exhibit a change in color. The enzyme-substrate reaction is terminated by the addition of a sulphuric acid solution and the color change is measured spectrophotometrically at a wavelength of 450 nm +/- 2 nm. The concentration of Apelin in the samples is then determined by comparing the O.D. of the samples to the standard curve

NCBI Description

This gene encodes the neuropeptide Apelin, an endogenous ligand of the G protein-coupled receptor APJ. This gene is highly expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues and the encoded preproprotein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate mature peptides of different sizes that are secreted into the plasma. These peptides play important roles in a broad range of physiological processes such as cardiac contractility, blood pressure, blood vessel growth, appetite and drink behavior, and pituitary hormone secretion. Mice lacking the encoded protein develop progressive heart failure and exhibit a shorter bleeding time, prothrombotic profile and increased bone mass. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2016]

apelin: Endogenous ligand for APJ, an alternative coreceptor with CD4 for HIV-1 infection. Inhibits HIV-1 entry in cells coexpressing CD4 and APJ. Apelin-36 has a greater inhibitory activity on HIV infection than other synthetic apelin derivatives. The oral intake in the colostrum and the milk could have a role in the modulation of the immune responses in neonates. May also have a role in the central control of body fluid homeostasis by influencing AVP release and drinking behavior. Belongs to the apelin family.
