• Biological Activity: ED50 <2ng/ml (> 5x105units/mg). The biological activity is determined by measuring the oncostatin M concentration dependent stimulation of proliferation of TF-1 cells. The suggested concentration range for in vitro activity studies is 0.2-20.0ng/ml. The optimal concentration should be determined for each specific application. Oncostatin M is observed to exert variable, cell type dependent effects. For example, oncostatin M is observed to stimulate the growth of normal fibroblasts and AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma cells, but is observed to inhibit the growth of A375 melanoma cells.

• Preparation and Storage: Lyophilized powder may be stored at -20 degree C. Reconstitute to nominal volume by adding sterile ddH2O. Aliquot and store at -20 degree C. Reconstituted product is stable for 12 months at -20 degree C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.

Oncostatin M is a member of a cytokine family that includes leukemia-inhibitory factor, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and interleukin 6. This gene encodes a growth regulator which inhibits the proliferation of a number of tumor cell lines. It regulates cytokine production, including IL-6, G-CSF and GM-CSF from endothelial cells.
