This assay employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate BMP6 in samples. An antibody specific for BMP6 has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any BMP6 present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for BMP6 is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of BMP6 bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

NCBI Description
This gene encodes a secreted ligand of the TGF-beta (transforming growth factor-beta) superfamily of proteins. Ligands of this family bind various TGF-beta receptors leading to recruitment and activation of SMAD family transcription factors that regulate gene expression. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate each subunit of the disulfide-linked homodimer. This protein regulates a wide range of biological processes including iron homeostasis, fat and bone development, and ovulation. Mice lacking this gene exhibit delayed ossification of the sternum, iron overload, and reduced fertility in females. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2016]
