NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
intermediate filament protein specific for astrocytes [RGD, Feb 2006]
Uniprot Description
GFAP: a class-III intermediate filament protein. A cell-specific marker that, during the development of the central nervous system, distinguishes astrocytes from other glial cells. Mutations in this gene cause Alexander disease, a rare disorder of astrocytes in the central nervous system. An additional transcript variant isoform has been described, but its full length sequence has not been determined.
Protein type: Cytoskeletal
Cellular Component: cell projection; membrane; cytoplasm; intermediate filament; myelin sheath
Molecular Function: integrin binding; structural constituent of cytoskeleton; structural molecule activity; kinase binding
Biological Process: Bergmann glial cell differentiation; extracellular matrix organization and biogenesis; regulation of neurotransmitter uptake; response to wounding; intermediate filament organization; neurite regeneration; intermediate filament-based process; astrocyte development

Product Notes
The GFAP gfap (Catalog #AAA219613) is an Antibody produced from Mouse and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The MOUSE ANTI BOVINE GFAP reacts with Chicken, Dog, Guinea Pig, Human, Mouse, Pig, Rabbit, Rat, Sheep and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's GFAP can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Immunohistology Frozen, Immunohistology Paraffin*, Radioimmunoassays (RIA), Western Blot (WB). Immunohistology - Paraffin: Application Note: This product requires protein digestion pre-treatment of paraffin sections e.g. trypsin or pronase. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the GFAP gfap for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "GFAP, Monoclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
