Background: Junction plakoglobin(JUP), also known as gamma-catenin, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the JUP gene. It is a member of the catenin protein family and homologous to beta-catenin, and it is mapped to 17q21.2. This gene encodes a major cytoplasmic protein that is the only known constituent common to submembranous plaques of both desmosomes and intermediate junctions. This protein forms distinct complexes with cadherins and desmosomal cadherins. Meanwhile, JUP may have distinct roles in Wnt signaling and cancer via differential effects on downstream target genes.
NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
This gene encodes a major cytoplasmic protein which is the only known constituent common to submembranous plaques of both desmosomes and intermediate junctions. This protein forms distinct complexes with cadherins and desmosomal cadherins and is a member of the catenin family since it contains a distinct repeating amino acid motif called the armadillo repeat. Mutation in this gene has been associated with Naxos disease. Alternative splicing occurs in this gene; however, not all transcripts have been fully described. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Uniprot Description
CTNNG: Common junctional plaque protein. The membrane- associated plaques are architectural elements in an important strategic position to influence the arrangement and function of both the cytoskeleton and the cells within the tissue. The presence of plakoglobin in both the desmosomes and in the intermediate junctions suggests that it plays a central role in the structure and function of submembranous plaques. Acts as a substrate for VE-PTP and is required by it to stimulate VE- cadherin function in endothelial cells. Can replace beta-catenin in E-cadherin/catenin adhesion complexes which are proposed to couple cadherins to the actin cytoskeleton. Homodimer. Component of an E-cadherin/ catenin adhesion complex composed of at least E-cadherin/CDH1 and gamma- catenin/JUP, and possibly alpha-catenin/CTNNA1; the complex is located to adherens junctions. The stable association of CTNNA1 is controversial as CTNNA1 was shown not to bind to F-actin when assembled in the complex. Interacts with MUC1. Interacts with CAV1. Interacts with PTPRJ. Interacts with DSC2. Belongs to the beta-catenin family.

The JUP jup (Catalog #AAA177507) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Anti-gamma Catenin Antibody reacts with Human, Mouse, Rat. No cross reactivity with other proteins. and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's Junction plakoglobin can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB), Immunohistochemistry (IHC-P), Immunohistochemistry (IHC-F). Western Blot: Concentration: 0.1-0.5mug/ml; Tested Species: Human, Mouse, Rat Immunohistochemistry (Paraffin-embedded Section): Concentration: 0.5-1mug/ml; Tested Species: Human, Mouse, Rat Immunohistochemistry (Frozen Section): Concentration: 0.5-1mug/ml; Tested Species: Rat; Predicted Species: Human. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the JUP jup for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Junction plakoglobin, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
