Thymidine phosphorylase precursor, also known TYMP, is a platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor that catalyzes the formation of thymine and 2-deoxy-D-ribose-1-phosphate from thymidine and orthophosphate. It is an angiogenic inducer that potently stimulates the growth of endothelial cells and induces chemotaxis. Increased expression of TYMP is seen in a wide variety of different solid tumors and inflammatory diseases and is often associated with poor prognosis. Recombinant human TYMP protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E Coli and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques.

This gene encodes an angiogenic factor which promotes angiogenesis in vivo and stimulates the in vitro growth of a variety of endothelial cells. It has a highly restricted target cell specificity acting only on endothelial cells. Mutations in this gene have been associated with mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2012]
