This gene encodes a member of the mitochondrial carrier family. The encoded protein is responsible for the movement of tricarboxylates, such as citrate, across the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is essential to the bioenergetics of hepatic cells, supplying the cytoplasm with a carbon source for fatty acid and sterol biosynthesis, and NAD+ for the glycolytic pathway.
