Principle of the Assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for SHBG has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any SHBG present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for SHBG is added to the wells. After washing, avidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of SHBG bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a steroid binding protein that was first described as a plasma protein secreted by the liver but is now thought to participate in the regulation of steroid responses. The encoded protein transports androgens and estrogens in the blood, binding each steroid molecule as a dimer formed from identical or nearly identical monomers. Polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
