NCBI Description

This gene belongs to the class II amino-acyl tRNA family. The encoded enzyme catalyzes the transfer of L-serine to tRNA (Ser) and is related to bacterial and yeast counterparts. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described but the biological validity of all variants is unknown. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2010]

Uniprot Description

Function: Catalyzes the attachment of serine to tRNA(Ser). Is also probably able to aminoacylate tRNA(Sec) with serine, to form the misacylated tRNA L-seryl-tRNA(Sec), which will be further converted into selenocysteinyl-tRNA(Sec). Ref.1

Catalytic activity: ATP + L-serine + tRNA(Ser) = AMP + diphosphate + L-seryl-tRNA(Ser).ATP + L-serine + tRNA(Sec) = AMP + diphosphate + L-seryl-tRNA(Sec).

Pathway: Aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis; selenocysteinyl-tRNA(Sec) biosynthesis; L-seryl-tRNA(Sec) from L-serine and tRNA(Sec): step 1/1.

Subunit structure: Homodimer. The tRNA molecule binds across the dimer

By similarity.

Subcellular location: Cytoplasm.

Domain: Consists of two distinct domains, a catalytic core and a N-terminal extension that is involved in tRNA binding

By similarity.

Post-translational modification: Phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR. Ref.7

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the class-II aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase family. Type-1 seryl-tRNA synthetase subfamily.

It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Seryl-tRNA synthetase, cytoplasmic, Recombinant Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
