Preparation and Storage

This assay employs the competitive inhibition enzyme immunoassay technique. An antibody specific for Beta-2-Microglobulin (b2M) has been pre-coated onto a microplate. A competitive inhibition reaction is launched between Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) labeled Beta-2-Microglobulin (b2M) and unlabeled Beta-2-Microglobulin (b2M) (Standards or samples) with the pre-coated antibody specific for Beta-2-Microglobulin (b2M). After incubation the unbound conjugate is washed off. The amount of bound HRP conjugate is reverse proportional to the concentration of Beta-2-Microglobulin (b2M) in the sample. After addition of the substrate solution, the intensity of color developed is reverse proportional to the concentration of Beta-2-Microglobulin (b2M) in the sample.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a serum protein found in association with the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I heavy chain on the surface of nearly all nucleated cells. The protein has a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure that can form amyloid fibrils in some pathological conditions. The encoded antimicrobial protein displays antibacterial activity in amniotic fluid. A mutation in this gene has been shown to result in hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia.[provided by RefSeq, Aug 2014]
