NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
In mice, the agouti gene encodes a paracrine signaling molecule that causes hair follicle melanocytes to synthesize pheomelanin, a yellow pigment, instead of the black or brown pigment, eumelanin. Pleiotropic effects of constitutive expression of the mouse gene include adult-onset obesity, increased tumor susceptibility, and premature infertility. This gene is highly similar to the mouse gene and encodes a secreted protein that may (1) affect the quality of hair pigmentation, (2) act as a pharmacological antagonist of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, (3) play a role in neuroendocrine aspects of melanocortin action, and (4) have a functional role in regulating lipid metabolism in adipocytes. Uniprot Description
ASIP: Involved in the regulation of melanogenesis. The binding of ASP to MC1R precludes alpha-MSH initiated signaling and thus blocks production of cAMP, leading to a down-regulation of eumelanogenesis (brown/black pigment) and thus increasing synthesis of pheomelanin (yellow/red pigment). In higher primates, agouti may affect the quality of hair pigmentation rather than its pattern of deposition. Could well play a role in neuroendocrine aspects of melanocortin action. May have some functional role in regulating the lipid metabolism with adipocytes.

Product Notes
The ASIP asip (Catalog #AAA634855) is a Protein and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. AAA Biotech's Agouti can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, ELISA (EL/EIA), Antibody blocking experiments. ELISA: 1:10,000-1:100,000 using 50-100ng/well Antibody Blocking: 5-10ug control peptide/1ug of MBS618407 or 1ul of MBS613352. Suitable for use in ELISA and antibody blocking experiments. Not recommended for use in Western Blot. Other applications not tested. Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the ASIP asip for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Agouti, Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
