A UBX (ubiquitin-regulatory X) domain-containing protein, UBXN2A, binds and inhibits mot-2, resulting in the induction of apoptosis and reduction in cell proliferation in both in vitro and in vivo models. UBXN2A binds to the substrate-binding domain of mot-2 and interferes with mot-2's protein interaction networks. The UBXN2A protein is a positive regulator of p53 through its interaction with the C-terminus of mot-2 where the p53-binding site is located. UBXN2A is an important anticancer factor that can contribute to p53 localization and activation as a host defense mechanism against cancerous growth.
