The evolutionarily conserved transmembrane anterior posterior transformation 1 protein, encoded by TAPT1, is involved in murine axial skeletal patterning. In eukaryotes, TAPT1 plays a role in axial skeletal patterning during early embryonic development. In mice, Tapt1 is predicted to comprise of several transmembrane domains, and part of the gene is orthologous to alternatively spliced human transcript encoding the cytomegalovirus gH receptor. TAPT1 mutations underlie a complex congenital syndrome, showing clinical overlap between lethal skeletal dysplasias and ciliopathies.
