Stathmin 1, a neuron-enriched soluble phosphoprotein is a ubiquitous, phylogenetically conserved protein present in the cytoplasm of cells in a variety of unphosphorylated and phosphorylated forms. Stathmin 1 is widely expressed in organisms ranging from Drosophila to humans and is especially highly expressed in the developing nervous system. Its expression is also elevated in a number of leukemias and solid tumors, which has led to the suggestion that it may be involved in tumorigenesis. The protein destabilizes microtubules and increases the frequency by which microtubule plus ends switch from growth to rapid shortening and thus plays an important role in linking cell signaling to the regulation of microtubule dynamics. Human Stathmin 1 has been mapped to chromosomal region 1p36.1-p35.

This gene belongs to the stathmin family of genes. It encodes a ubiquitous cytosolic phosphoprotein proposed to function as an intracellular relay integrating regulatory signals of the cellular environment. The encoded protein is involved in the regulation of the microtubule filament system by destabilizing microtubules. It prevents assembly and promotes disassembly of microtubules. STMN1: a microtubule-associated protein involved in the regulation of the microtubule filament system by destabilizing microtubules. It prevents assembly and promotes disassembly of microtubules. Phosphorylation reduces tubulin binding 10-fold and suppresses the MT polymerization inhibition activity. Present in much greater abundance in cells from patients with acute leukemia of different subtypes than in normal peripheral blood lymphocytes, nonleukemic proliferating lymphoid cells, bone marrow cells, or cells from patients with chronic lymphoid or myeloid leukemia.
