Scientific Background: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an endogenously produced intracellular enzyme present in almost every cell in the body (3). It works by catalyzing the dismutation of the superoxide radical O2" to O2 and H2O2, which are then metabolized to H2O and O2 by catalase and glutathione peroxidase (2, 5). In general, SODs play a major role in antioxidant defense mechanisms (4). There are three types of SOD in mammalian cells. One form (SOD1) contains Cu and Zn ions as a homodimer and exists in the cytoplasm. The two subunits of 16 kDa each are linked by two cysteines forming an intra-subunit disulphide bridge (3). The second form (SOD2) is a manganese containing enzyme and resides in the mitochondrial matrix. It is a homotetramer of 80 kDa. The third form (SOD3 or EC-SOD) is like SOD1 in that it contains Cu and Zn ions, however it is distinct in that it is a homotetramer, with a mass of 30 kDA and it exists only in the extra-cellular space (6). SOD3 can also be distinguished by its heparin-binding capacity (1).

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a member of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) protein family. SODs are antioxidant enzymes that catalyze the dismutation of two superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. The product of this gene is thought to protect the brain, lungs, and other tissues from oxidative stress. The protein is secreted into the extracellular space and forms a glycosylated homotetramer that is anchored to the extracellular matrix (ECM) and cell surfaces through an interaction with heparan sulfate proteoglycan and collagen. A fraction of the protein is cleaved near the C-terminus before secretion to generate circulating tetramers that do not interact with the ECM. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Product Notes

The SOD3 sod3 (Catalog #AAA805569) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The SOD (EC) Antibody: ATTO 390 reacts with Human, Mouse, Rat and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's SOD (EC) can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB). 1:1000 for WB. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the SOD3 sod3 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "SOD (EC), Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
