Sarcolemmal membrane-associated protein (SLMAP) encodes a 91 kDa polypeptide with an N-terminal sequence encompassing a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that resides at the centrosome. SLMAP is a tail-anchored protein involved in fundamental cellular processes, such as myoblast fusion, cell cycle progression, and chromosomal inheritance. SLMAP misexpression is associated with endothelial dysfunctions in diabetes and cancer. SLMAP may be an important regulator of glucose uptake or involved in GLUT-4 fusion/translocation into the plasma membrane of mouse abdominal adipose tissue and changes in SLMAP expression are linked to hyperglycemia and diabetes. SLMAP is part of the conserved striatin-interacting phosphatase and kinase (STRIPAK) complex required for specific signaling pathways in yeasts, filamentous fungi, insects, and mammals.
