NCBI Description

This gene encodes a steroid binding protein that was first described as a plasma protein secreted by the liver but is now thought to participate in the regulation of steroid responses. The encoded protein binds each steroid molecule as a dimer formed from identical or nearly identical monomers. The use of alternate promoters and alternatively spliced transcripts have been described. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq]

Uniprot Description

SHBG: Functions as an androgen transport protein, but may also be involved in receptor mediated processes. Each dimer binds one molecule of steroid. Specific for 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone, testosterone, and 17-beta-estradiol. Regulates the plasma metabolic clearance rate of steroid hormones by controlling their plasma concentration. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Secreted; Secreted, signal peptide

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 17p13.1

Cellular Component: extracellular region

Molecular Function: androgen binding

Biological Process: primary spermatocyte growth

Research Articles on SHBG

1. SHBG, CBG and total cortisol and free plasma cortisol were measured and to investigate whether or not these analytes correlated with the degree of insulin resistance and the presence of the metabolic syndrome.
2. genetic variants of SHBG may influence SHBG levels and in part contribute to the phenotypic expression of human diseases (Review)
3. SHBG levels were positively associated with cortical bone size, independently from sex-steroid levels
4. involvement of SHBG and SHBG polymorphisms in the definition of breast cancer risk; action of SHBG in breast cancer cells including inhibition of several effects of estradiol in breast cancer cells [review]
5. Higher SHBG levels reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
6. Circulating NT-proBNP levels are positively associated with sex hormone-binding globulin levels in non-obese peri- and postmenopausal women.
7. The opposing effects of estrogens and testosterone on the immune system and imbalance in the levels of these hormones in systemic lupus erythematosus patients can be enhanced by the SHBG327Asn protein variant.
8. Reference intervals were calculated for male testosterone, SHBG, FSH and LH in serum from 599 individuals.
9. sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels are related to a decrease in High-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein A-I levels during puberty in boys and to a decrease in triglyceride levels during puberty in both sexes
10. Although the concentration of SHBG does not change in fetus when pregnant woman is complicated with gestational diabetes, it is already influenced by the fetal regulation on hyperinsulinemia.

Product Notes

The SHBG shbg (Catalog #AAA611774) is an Antibody produced from Goat and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, Human (SHBG, TEBG) reacts with Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's Sex Hormone Binding Globulin can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, ELISA (EL/EIA), Western Blot (WB), Radioimmunoassay (RIA). Suitable for use in RIA, ELISA and Western Blot. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the SHBG shbg for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
