In placenta, associated with trophoblast cells.
Function
Sodium-dependent lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) symporter, which plays an essential role for blood-brain barrier formation and function (By similarity). Specifically expressed in endothelium of the blood-brain barrier of micro-vessels and transports LPC into the brain (By similarity). Transport of LPC is essential because it constitutes the major mechanism by which docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid that is essential for normal brain growth and cognitive function, enters the brain. Transports LPC carrying long-chain fatty acids such LPC oleate and LPC palmitate with a minimum acyl chain length of 14 carbons (By similarity). Does not transport docosahexaenoic acid in unesterified fatty acid (By similarity). Specifically required for blood-brain barrier formation and function, probably by mediating lipid transport (By similarity). Not required for central nervous system vascular morphogenesis (By similarity). Acts as a transporter for tunicamycin, an inhibitor of asparagine-linked glycosylation. In placenta, acts as a receptor for ERVFRD-1/syncytin-2 and is required for trophoblast fusion.
Note
Cytoplasmic punctae that may represent vesicles shuttling between the endoplasmic reticulum and the plasma membrane (PubMed:21677192).
Preparation and Storage
Store at -20 degree C. Stable for 12 months from date of receipt.

NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene is a transmembrane protein and sodium-dependent lysophosphatidylcholine transporter. The encoded protein is involved in the establishment of the blood-brain barrier and is required for brain growth and function. Defects in this gene are a cause of a progressive microcephaly syndrome. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2017]

Uniprot Description

MFSD2: Plays a role in thermogenesis via beta-adrenergic signaling pathway. May be the main plasma membrane tunicamycin transporter. Belongs to the major facilitator superfamily. 3 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Membrane protein, integral; Membrane protein, multi-pass

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 1p34.2

Product Notes

The MFSD2A mfsd2a (Catalog #AAA9629499) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The MFSD2A Antibody reacts with Human, Mouse and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's MFSD2A can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, ELISA (EIA)(peptide). ELISA(peptide): 1:20000-1:40000. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the MFSD2A mfsd2a for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "MFSD2A, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
